How do retail florists make the most of their good neighbor EVENT? The most important step in making this promotion a total success is to collect information from each consumer who receives free Rio Roses®. The florist can use this information to send these prospective new customers promotions, reminders on special holidays and other information about their store. Have consumers fill out a Reminder Card! Get neighbors to lend a helping hand! Florists can enlist co-sponsors to work with them. Enlist commercial accounts and other businesses like their bank, insurance broker, attorney, hair dresser, favorite restaurants, etc. Tell the neighbors! Florists should pursue publicity opportunities. Send press releases to local newspapers and radio stations, or ask the mayor to make it an official holiday. Organize the activities! Florists need to develop a plan and budget to stay on track. For the budget, itemize all expenses including advertising and cost of product. Have a plan for people to register before they receive their flowers, invite co-sponsors to help distribute flowers during the event. Create loyal customers! Beyond creating awareness for neighborliness and a sense of community, florists should create ways to encourage those who registered to become regular everyday customers for their shop. Send each participant a thank you note and a coupon offering a 20% discount on their next in-shop purchase. |

Focus on the Future “I was able to see what I wanted to do. I could see the opportunity, even when others could not, and I stay committed to doing it and doing it well, no matter what.” - Magic Johnson Traditionally, the summer months are slow in the floral industry. It seems that today’s downturned economy has made the 2009 summer even a bit slower than years past. We recognize the challenges you face in making sales for today. We can not control the market, we can only participate. If business is slow, then now is the perfect time to be proactive and do what you can to maximize future sales. Ask yourself, what can I do today to help our sales tomorrow? Here are a few suggestions: Learn about your customers – Now is a great time to learn more about your customers. Find out what products they are using most, what they are doing to sustain and/or get new business, and most important, ask how you can work better together. If you both have time, meet with your customers in person. Sell for the future – Traditionally, sales pick up in the Fall, so you should be preparing for Fall right now. Most growers/importers offer early pre-book pricing discounts. Take advantage and lock-in low prices. Promote Fall to your customers and encourage them to book early with you as well. Look for new products – What’s new and exciting that you could offer your customers? Now is a good time to contact suppliers to sample new varieties and evaluate new products that you can offer. Discuss the new products with your customers to see if they see value in them. You may find a new top seller! If your sales are sluggish, keep your chin up and do all you can to prepare for a better future. Opportunities for new business and increased sales exist. Too many people wait for opportunities to come to them instead of creating their own. Find out what your customers need, show them what you can offer, and work together to make the future a prosperous one. The key is to be consistent, persistent and make it beneficial for both of you. |
